Lucky FABB- Check out Diane von Furstenburg’s Advice on succeeding as a Business Woman (video included)

WHOA! This week has been amazing! New York Fashion Week is well underway. With that comes, not just shows, but tons of events. Lucky’s Fashion and Beauty Blogger (FABB) Conference was one of them. I was surrounded by SO MANY smart and talented writers, lovers of fashion and beauty.

I will be sharing pictures, and tons more info that will also include more videos, so stay tuned!

Below is a video of Diane von Furstenburg. She speaks about  what you need to do to be a successful entreprenuer/ business woman. This isn’t specific to those us who work in fashion/beauty. This can be applied to any field. I adore her. She told us ” The most important relationship you have, is the relationship you have with yourself”

Six Things Carm Did During Irene

I hope this post finds everyone safe and sound! I am well, my apt didn’t experience any damage during the storm. Some folks in the tri-state area were not so lucky. I will be praying that flood waters recede sooner than later and anyone injured is healed swiftly!

I was off yesterday and because there are no trains are running today I didn’t go in to work. I was able to thoroughly clean my kitchen and bathroom. That alone made me feel like less of a lazy bum.lol. Along with some housekeeping I did a few other things….Allow me to share my past 48 hours with you guys.

I deep cleaned my makeup brushes. Since I haven’t worn makeup while I have been in my humble abode they have had ample time to dry.

Stove top popcorn. Nothing beats the old school way. NOTHING.

I put a dent in my checking account…. I ordered my stuff in my fave scent (Ambrosia) from YumYum Candle. You can get an extra 20% off by entering ESSENCE at check out until 8.31. I ordered Shea Moisture from Walgreens.com. The hair products are buy one get one 50% off. You can save an additional 20% by entering SHEA4FALL at check out- free shipping w/ orders over $25.I order some hair goodies from my one of my favorite small businesses- Oyin.

I washed and conditioned my hair…This Sweetback treatment by Miss Jessies is the bees knees! I pre shampooed with Ojon’s restorative treatment.

After washing my face with Lush’s Angels on Bare Skin I used this awesome mask.

I made lots of coffee…Mostly decaf so that I wasn’t too excited during the storm.lol

Welp I reckon that is it! I am returning to work in the am via a car service, seeing as though subways are still not running.

One more thing…many people talked about being over prepared for the storm, that they wished it was “more” etc etc. Today is the sixth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Over 2000 people lost their lives. Many people pray every single day that their lives weren’t turned upside down by a category five hurricane. Be humble, count your blessings.

Aside: On My Own.

If you follow me on twitter or facebook; you probably know that I am a really huge fan of the 80′s move FAME. FAME makes me want to be a teen again.

At any rate, the kids in the movie were extremely talented. Yet many had to deal with real life, adult situations.  Every time I watch I am reminded of the harshness of the world that my parents shielded me from. Still, we were street and book smart kids, and were thoroughly prepared for the “real” world and all of it’s challenges. I realize more and more that many people didn’t have that. I am sure those preparations allow my mom to sleep at night (for the most part) knowing that I can handle what comes my way…..and for the things that I do need help with my mom and family are there to pick up the pieces. Luckily for them I am better at budgeting and don’t call home for cash, lol.

Sure there is no real manual on this thing called life. You take things as they come. I am reminded of that daily. I have no idea what made me want to write this post. I guess just reflecting on where I am in life and where I intend on going. I am happy so far with my accomplishments ….if only  I owned a brownstone …….lol

This is one of my fave scenes in the movie….hope it inspires you to take inventory of what you have done so far in life; then propels you forward to keep going.

In a makeup rut? Click here!

It happens to the best of us…..Oddly enough it’s when your stash of makeup includes so many items you don’t even remember what you own. You then slip into a a mode of wearing the same eye look, same blush, same lips. As I clutch my pearls; sometimes you don’t even  wash your makeup brushes… I am no Pat McGrath but here are some tips to help you climb out of this mundane hole you’re in….My next blog post should be “Carmen should take her own advice”, but I digress.

First, get organized. I know, what a novel idea. How can you use different stuff if you have not a clue what you even own?! If this seems daunting, don’t get too OCD in the beginning. I am just talking categorizing. Blush with blush with, lipstick with lipstick, etc. This is a HUGE part of my problem. I have crap every where and it makes my hair stand on end just looking at it.

Pictured above is about 1/4 of my mess of a makeup stash.I am currently in the process of  finding better storage solutions and getting better organized. You can’t use what you have effectively if you don’t know what you have. Hotmess.org

Next, after you know what you have, take a gander at things you never use. Or in my case, take stuff out of the boxes that you haven’t touched. SMH.

Look at makeup videos on youtube, check out magazines, and gather inspiration. From here you can get an idea of how you would like to transform your current look, try something new, or use a product in a different way than intended.

As far as makeup brushes go. If you haven’t cleaned your brushes in awhile, do it ASAP.You can’t use products properly if your tools are filthy. Maybe challenge yourself to do a different look everyday. You could grab a blush and try it with new eyeshadows….Clearly there are endless possibilities if you think about it.

Finally make sure your makeup basics are up to date and don’t need to be thrown out. Here are some great items to start with.

Below is a great video that also gives ideas for escaping this rut. Check it out.

My Sunday …a picture diary. and the trinkets I bought.

So on Mother’s Day I would have loved to have spent it with my mom, grandma and the homies, but they’re 700 miles away. So I decided I would enjoy the weather (it was like 70 degrees). My mission was also not to spend a ton of money. I have actually been pretty good with my spending habits and I think through 95% of my purchases before I shell out cash. Sunday I figured I could be out and about, practice taking some shots with my camera and not splurge and buy things I’ll regret.

I went walking and was able to fire off a few shots and managed to get a nice lady to take a copy pics of me. I rocked a turban/headwrap whatever you want to call it to try something different.  I am wearing M.A.C.”s half and half lipstick.

Don’t forget today is the last day to purchase the Makeup Show NYC advanced tickets!

Happy Friday! I’m working on a few reviews and stuff, and editing photos can be really time consuming! So in hopes to not get up a half assed reviews and not so good pics I need a couple more days….During the process I’ve found many pics that I thought I would share with you all. It’s all pretty random, no rhyme or reason. But I think it puts a face to go with my posts.

Enjoy your weekend and thank you for checking out my blog. :)

Black Girls Rock!

Obviously! This past Saturday evening a star studded event occurred in NYC…. Founded by DJ Beverly Bonds,  Black Girls Rock  celebrated their 5th annual show, honoring Ruby Dee, Keke Palmer and Raven Symone.

“MISSION ABOUT BLACK GIRLS ROCK!:

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. is 501(c)3 non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization established to promote the arts for young women of color, as well as to encourage dialogue and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media. Since 2006, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! has been dedicated to the healthy development of young women and girls. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! seeks to build the self-esteem and self-worth of young women of color by changing their outlook on life, broadening their horizons, and helping them to empower themselves. For the past four years, we have enjoyed the opportunity to enrich the lives of girls aged 12 to 17 years old through mentorship, arts education, cultural exploration and public service. At BLACK GIRLS ROCK!, young women are offered access to enrichment programs and opportunities that place special emphasis on personal development through the arts and cooperative learning. By speaking to the next generation in their formative years about issues of self-worth, goals, and aspirations, the organization reinforces the message that young women need not objectify themselves or relinquish their autonomy. “

The only problem? I wasn’t there. From what I saw via twitter and pictures it was all sorts of AWESOMENESS. It also reminded me that I haven’t volunteered for a good cause as of late.Unacceptable. Going to get on that! The actual show will air on BET on November 7th, be sure to tune in!

Here are some amazing pics of the night.

B More Carm.

I have been meaning to share these pictures with you all. If you recall I went to Baltimore during Easter weekend. I visited one of my good friends. We were able to catch up on things, eat and did a tiny bit of shopping.I really dig Baltimore. It gets a bad rep, but I enjoyed eating on the Harbor and being around people I have known for years. We visited  Oyin and I stalked down some items I needed to go with my Liberty of London things I bought from Target.

Here are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure. I’m diggin my hair .Real 1973 like…… Hope you all had a great weekend.
